The study of history and economics explain economic dynamics, entrepreneurial decisions and economic policy choices using different models and terminology. The interdisciplinary nature of our Master's programme breaks down such barriers of understanding and brings the two disciplines into a productive, collaborative relationship: Economists learn about the importance of historical factors and socio-cultural contexts, while history students become familiar with economic argumentation and research approaches. The Master's programme is intertemporal, interdisciplinary and interdepartmental. It combines quantitative and qualitative working methods and different thematic foci.
The Master's degree can be completed as a Major (90 ECTS credits) or Minor (30 ECTS credits). An application is only required for the major. The Minor in Economic History can be combined with a major programme in Business and Economics.
Admission to the MA in Economic History (Major) requires a Bachelor's degree in History (History or Modern History), Economics (Economics or Business Administration) or Social Sciences (Sociology, Political Sciences, Anthropology) from an accredited research university recognised by the UZH and comprising at least 60 ECTS credits in the above-mentioned subjects. For admission with a Bachelor's degree, an overall grade of "good" is required (5.0 in the Swiss grading system or equivalent in other grading systems). A letter of motivation is also required. Students without knowledge and skills in history or economics may be admitted if they acquire the missing knowledge and skills in the form of additional credits (admission with additional requirements). These additional requirements may amount to a maximum of 12 ECTS credits. The additional requirements will be determined on the basis of the application documents submitted.
Historians often present their interpretation of the past in written form. To gain a deeper understanding of the discipline of history, students need to learn not only how to read and analyse historical sources and studies, but also to write research papers. At the Department of History and the Master's in Economic History, we therefore place great emphasis on academic writing. Many courses require written assessments.
The main language in the Master's degree programme is German. A good knowledge of German is a prerequisite. Some courses, however, are also offered in English.
The degree opens a wide field of activity in research, teaching, journalism, and public administration. Students are also qualified for management positions in companies, foundations, professional associations, and international organizations, which require a deeper understanding of the complex interaction of economic and social factors.
Under certain conditions, the teaching diploma for Matura schools can also be acquired with the study program in Economic History. The conditions are listed under the heading Teaching Diplomas on the website of the Department of History.

The Master’s degree in Economic History is cross-epochal, interdisciplinary, and interdepartmental. The Department of History and the Research Center for Social and Economic History at the Faculty of Philosophy of the UZH and the Chair for Economic History at the Department of Economics of the UZH participate in teaching and research.
