Why do some people think they own the world? This group examines economic, social and environmental histories to understand how certain conventions, otherwise taken for granted, have emerged in contexts of power and conflicting interests. Individually, our members work on topics such as ancient conceptions of justice, Swiss commercial elites, medieval kinship, Indigenous utopias, animal resources, global archives, and the currents of time and history in the Anthropocene. Together, we critically illuminate the big questions that transcend and connect each of our epochs and fields of expertise.
