Knowledge about humility, humility and knowledge

Basel, Universitätsbibliothek, A X 83, fol. 27v/28r («Ansicht offen»), e-codices.

Sub-project Silvia Negri

In my sub-project, I explore how knowledge about humility was produced and disseminated in the European Middle Ages between the 13th and the 15th centuries, and why this was done. I am interested in understanding how knowledge about humility and humble individuals emerged, where it stemmed from, how it was demonstrated, the communities in which it gained stability, how it was handled, what and whom it was meant to influence, and what made it different from knowledge about other features of human bodies and souls. While I aim to chart epistemologies of human humility within specific contexts, I also hope to convey new insights into late medieval practices for gathering information on psychic experiences and embodied core values, as well as strategies for promoting moral, cultural and political awareness at the threshold between shared ideals, idealized norms, and power relations.
