The Terms of Opposites: A Semantic Analysis of humilitas, humiliatio, and Their Derivatives

Sub-project Michele Marchioni

This project aims to investigate the meanings of the terms humilitas, humiliatio, and their derivatives by conducting a semantic analysis of major textual corpora from the medieval period. What is the statistical incidence of the terms humilitas, humiliatio, and their derivatives? In what contexts do they appear? What are their most frequent co-occurrences? What synonyms and variants exist for these terms? What concepts emerge from the combination of words and phrases? How does the meaning of humilitas, humiliatio, and their derivatives vary according to their grammatical forms? How do their meanings shift over time? These are some of the questions the research will aim to answer.

Among its objectives, the research seeks to demonstrate the applicability of computational linguistic theories and methodologies to the study of medieval texts and to propose a potential approach for integrating digital technologies into the study of history. One potential development includes the creation of a new corpus, which could be made available for future research.
