"Brill's Companion to Polybius" (Herausgeberschaft)

Polybius’ Histories provide a detailed, though in places fragmentary, account of events from the First Punic War until the end of the Third Punic War (264-146). Covering events ranging from Spain to Bactria, their explicit focus on is on the extraordinary expansion of Roman power in the Mediterranean world. Frequently emphasizing his own high standards as an historian, Polybius is one of the most important sources for Roman history.

Brill’s Companion to Polybius, edited by Felix K. Maier and Bruce Gibson, will provide new perspectives on Polybius which have not been previously appreciated. It will advance the field, going beyond traditional approaches and much-discussed issues like the historical accurateness or date of composition which have been extensively covered by Ziegler, Pédech, Walbank and most of their successors. All contributors will address new topics such as the use of gender in Polybius’ historical approach, the environment, and the emotions.
