My team investigates the intricate relationships between knowledge, technology, and politics across international and local scales during the 19th and 20th centuries. With regional focuses on East Asia and Africa, we examine the mechanisms through which knowledge and technologies are exchanged across different levels and localities. Our focus is particularly on the policies, ideologies, and power dynamics that shape these exchanges and silos. In addition to multi-archival research, we mobilize oral history and quantitative analysis to draw comparisons and contrasts.
Currently, our main mission is to conduct the Swiss National Science Foundation PRIMA Project, “Rice Knowledge and Practices between Pacific Asia and West Africa: International Development meets Local Farming (1960–1991).”
