The Chair for Early Modern History explores phenomena of social, economic, and cultural history, roughly from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. In geographical terms, we focus on Italian, German, and French-speaking Europe, on West Africa, as well as on the Atlantic world, the Mediterranean, and insular Southeast Asia. Areas of research and teaching include practices, institutions, and networks of maritime trade; consumption and material culture; autobiographical writing and travel literature; colonialism and the slave trade; migrations and questions of otherness; as well as – broadly speaking – global entanglements and problems of cross-cultural relations.
